2022 fable grant recipients

Olivia Liu is a Chinese-American writer and editor. She is a recent graduate of NYU, where she studied English and creative writing, and currently works as an assistant editor. A native New Yorker with Shanghai roots, she writes often about the immigrant experience.

Laura Jean Henebry is a creative writer working on her first collection of poetry. She can be found writing in the early hours of the morning with a cup of hot tea and discarded clementine peels piled next to her. When not writing, she is roasting marshmallows around a campfire in the Adirondacks, or dancing in her living room to her records. She resides with her two dogs and graphic designer partner nestled between the Adirondack and Catskill mountains of Upstate, NY. 

Almah LaVon Rice is a fairy march monster based in the ancestral territory of the Osage Nation (Pittsburgh, PA). She writes fiction and creative nonfiction in the key of the Afrosurreal, and is at work on her first book.

what is the fable grant?

 

The Fable Grant is an initiative led by New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young to provide otherwise unattainable writing opportunities to the women of the writing community.

The Fable Grant is made possible by:

who is the grant for?

 

For unpublished* writers with a financial need who:

Identify as a woman or nonbinary.

(Whether they are cisgender, transgender, nonbinary,
genderqueer, or bigender).

Have a fiction novel or poetry collection in progress.

Are a U.S. Citizen.

Are at least 18 years old.

You must meet all criteria above in order to qualify.

Definition of unpublished: Unpublished as an author. This includes both trade publishing & self-publishing in the U.S. or abroad. An applicant with a book deal for an as-yet unpublished book is considered published for the purposes of this grant & is ineligible. Published essays, short stories, & articles do not render an applicant ineligible.

what should the funds be used for?

 

Writing workshops, conferences, or retreats.

Research-related classes, books, or travel.

University level writing courses. 

Writing equipment.

Such as a laptop, keyboard, headphones, software, etc. 

Childcare. 

Any financial barrier between you & your writing.
